Soryu-Class Attack Submarines
World-Class Conventional Submarines - Soryu-class are Japan's most advanced attack submarines. 12 boats commissioned 2009-2021. Large (4,200 tons submerged - among largest conventional submarines). AIP (Air Independent Propulsion) via Stirling engines (SS-501 to SS-510) - 2+ weeks submerged without snorkeling. Last 2 boats (SS-511, SS-512): World-first lithium-ion batteries (no AIP, but longer range/speed). Very deep diving (650 meters test depth). Extremely quiet (anechoic tiles, pump-jet). 6 torpedo tubes, 30 weapons (Type 89 torpedoes, Harpoon missiles). Advanced sensors (ZQQ-7 flank array, Type 2076 sonar). All 12 active as of 2025. Among world's best conventional submarines - rival German Type 212/214, Swedish Gotland. Critical ASW/anti-ship capability vs China, North Korea.
