Full-length flight deck (646 ft) - carrier-like appearance. Island superstructure starboard side. Two aircraft elevators. Up to 11 helicopters (SH-60K, MCH-101). 16 VLS cells (ESSM), SeaRAM, 2 Phalanx. Advanced ASW (OQQ-22 sonar, towed array). 30 knots, COGAG propulsion. Primary mission: Anti-submarine warfare. Secondary: Command ship, disaster relief. Controversial design (resembles carriers) but officially "destroyers." Both active as of 2025. Pioneered full-deck design that evolved into Izumo-class. Bridge between conventional destroyers and light carriers.
