Takao-Class Protected Cruisers (1888 - not the WWII heavy cruiser)
Earliest Modern Cruisers - Takao-class (1888) were among Japan's first modern cruisers. 2 ships commissioned 1888-1889. British-built by Palmers. Tiny (1,720 tons), coal-fired, 18 knots. Two 10.2-inch guns (heavy for size). Sino-Japanese War veterans (1894-1895). Too old for Russo-Japanese War. Both scrapped 1911 (23 years service). Represented earliest Meiji-era naval modernization - Japan buying British ships to create modern navy. Note: Not same as WWII Takao-class heavy cruisers (1932).
