First ocean-going destroyers since WWI. Named after naval heroes (Leberecht Maass = German admiral). Stability problems (top-weight issues plagued class). WWII service (1939-1944): Norway campaign, Atlantic operations, English Channel. Heavy combat losses (Z1/Z3 lost 1940, others 1944). Nazi rearmament milestone.
