First German cruiser with 8-inch guns and advanced fire control radar. Atlantic operations (1940-1942): Commerce raiding, convoy attacks. Battle of Barents Sea (31 Dec 1942): Failed to destroy Convoy JW 51B, damaged by British destroyers, strategic failure. Limited operations 1943-1945 due to fuel shortages. Scuttled at Kiel (3 May 1945) to avoid Soviet capture. Raised 1945-1948, scrapped.
